Jon Dadi Bodvarsson pinpoints Rotherham United qualities Bolton Wanderers can adopt for promotion

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson believes Bolton Wanderers need to take a couple of aspects from promoted Rotherham United to help them challenge for promotion in the upcoming season.

Wanderers finished ninth in the 2021/22 League One campaign, which was a good achievement for a newly promoted side. In the upcoming season, Wanderers are fully focused on challenging for promotion from the off and are targeting a place in the top six and beyond.

Ian Evatt's side finished 10 points from the top six and will be aiming to close that gap to the summit of the division. Wanderers' season begins on July 30 with a trip to Portman Road to take on Ipswich Town.

The Millers were promoted to the Championship last season as runners-up to Wigan Athletic. Bodvarsson was able to view Paul Warne's side in League One more closely after joining Wanderers in the January transfer window from Millwall.

And the Iceland international believes Wanderers need to adopt a couple of the qualities the Millers possess, such as their work rate, disciplined defending and their streetwise nature in matches. The striker believes Wanderers could have a promotion-winning formula if they combine that with what they already have in their game.

He said: “You look at the team who is promoted, Rotherham, and I have full respect for them. Their style of play isn’t the most attractive in the world but they are very streetwise, hard-working, disciplined defensively.

"I think if we can add just a little bit of that to our game then I think promotion can happen. Sometimes you just have to join the ugliness of the game and make it a scrap. That is inevitable.

“We can improve on noticing that. Sometimes you can see that in the first 15 or 20 minutes of the game and I think it comes with a bit of experience.

“Everything has to click. There is a lot of hard work you have to put in but also we have to be a little lucky as well. That is why pre-season is so important, working on the little things that we can improve on to make us a stronger and better team than last season."
