Joke about McDonald's chicken nuggets enlightens many about why there are holes in the box

A joke on TikTok ended up as an education for McDonald's fans who learned something new about McDonald's nugget boxes. It all started when Rachel Anderson ordered a box of 20 chicken pieces from the fast food favourite.

She then jokingly asked on TikTok: "Why do McDonald's put these little holes on the side of the box? Is it not like a little bit too late for that?" This was, of course, a reference to how animals can be transported with 'air holes'.

The joke went over some viewers' heads, who took time to explain the actual reason for the holes being there, the Star reports. One said: "Lets the steam get out so they don’t go soggy," one said.

And another wrote: "If you leave hot objects in a box without much airflow it gets soggy. It's to ventilate better."

Others said they "took a second to understand the joke", with a viewer saying: "It’s for the chickens, so they can breathe".

A second also noted that the nuggets "need to breathe" because they "can't have them dying now".

McDonald's is to close its restaurant on Monday (September 19) for Queen Elizabeth II's funeral. It said: "All of our UK restaurants will be closed on Monday until 5pm, to allow everyone at McDonald’s to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."

A Government statement said: "Monday 19 September, the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral, will be a national bank holiday. This will allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate Her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning."
