Following the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles County, federal and local law enforcement agencies have joined forces to establish a Joint Regional Fire Crimes Task Force. This task force, as announced by the Justice Department, aims to investigate and prosecute criminal activities associated with the wildfire crisis.
The task force comprises representatives from various agencies, including the FBI, ATF, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, and the city’s police department. Its primary focus will be on addressing crimes such as looting, burglary, impersonation offenses, arson, illegal drone activity, and financial fraud targeting both disaster victims and individuals making charitable donations.

US Attorney Martin Estrada emphasized the importance of preventing further victimization, stating, “We will not permit victims to be re-victimized.” He stressed the need for accountability in cases where individuals exploit the post-disaster situation for personal gain.
As the region begins the process of rebuilding and receives donations and relief funds, the task force will work diligently to ensure that those engaging in criminal activities are held responsible for their actions. By targeting criminal actors seeking to take advantage of the wildfire crisis, the task force aims to safeguard the well-being of the affected communities and uphold the integrity of relief efforts.
