Join Newcastle's ABBA Disco Wonderland as party night promises non-stop hits

A night of non-stop ABBA hits is set to pack out Newcastle's newest music venue this September in a glittering addition to its opening programme - and fans are being encouraged to dress in true seventies and eighties style.

NX Newcastle, which is currently all set for its big opening weekend, has announced an upcoming takeover by ABBA Disco Wonderland. And the event, promising a non-stop playlist of the band's mega hits, it is set to rock the venue - the former 02 Academy in Westgate Road - on September 29.

The club, which opened for a preview on Tuesday, will be transformed into an ABBA-theme disco extravaganza for the one night only - and that means plenty of disco lights, confetti cannons and CO2 jets across the dancefloor. And the event, which is organised by the team behind the popular ABBA Bingo Wonderland and has visited Newcastle before, is promising audiences a night to remember.

Besides the Swedish supergroup's top tunes, there will added attractions in store. Everyone is encouraged to dress in 'groovy' attire and it will be a case of The Winner Takes It All as there will be prizes up for grabs for the best dressed.

There also will be plenty of fun photo opportunities, with a professional photographer on hand to catch people on camera. The audience can expect a night full of all the big hits such as Mamma Mia, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! and Voulez Vous at what is billed as the UK’s best - and biggest - tribute club night.

And they also will be kept on their feet with some of the best 70s and 80s floor fillers which will be added to the mix. Organisers are expecting the night to appeal to a wide mix of people, from true fans of ABBA, who made a memorable debut at 1974's Eurovision, to the city's university students.

The ABBA Disco Wonderland is this month on its fourth UK tour which follows on the back of three sell-outs and it has hosted more than 150,000 people over the past four years. Its stop-off in Newcastle will offer fans a chance to get the measure of the newly-opened NX building which has undergone a £2.7m revamp.

Already the 1,500-capacity club has announced it will be opening a World Cup Fan Zone to bring all the England action in November, in addition to a planned programme including a wide range of live events. The upcoming ABBA night will start at 9pm, with tickets costing £9.

A spokesperson from Disco Wonderland said: “We’re delighted to be bringing ABBA Disco Wonderland back to Newcastle. The crowd is always amazing here and we know this year will be no different.

"We’re going to be pulling out all the stops for the event so expect our biggest and best show ever!” To buy tickets for the over-18s event, which will require ID upon entry, see here.
