Johnstone Burgh soar to top of the table with dominant win over Thorniewood United

Manager Jamie McKim insists Johnstone Burgh will keep their feet firmly on the ground – despite rising to the top of the First Division table.

The in-form Keanie Park side travelled to Robertson Park in Uddingston hoping to pick up their third league win on the spin. And well-worked set-piece goals from Stuart Fyfe and Mark Donaldson in the second half put the Burgh side on the road to do just that after a dominant performance in North Lanarkshire.

While the hosts did pull one back through Frazer Stobie’s wonderful finish from the edge of the box, McKim’s men stood firm to bag all three points which pushed them joint-top of the division alongside St Cadoc’s.

While delighted with their current run of form, McKim believes the club’s lofty position means nothing with so many games still left to play of the campaign – especially given they face off against fellow table-toppers St Cadoc’s this evening at New Tinto Park.

McKim told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “It was a tough game against Thorniewood. The first half was quite even, although I’d say we created more chances.

“The second half we took over. We got ahead and looked comfortable from then on.

“They scored a wondergoal, to be fair it was a cracker, but I think that was the only way they were ever going to score. We were so solid defensively.

“That’s three wins on the bounce and of course it’s always nice to see your name at the top of the table. But we all know it means absolutely nothing at the moment.

“We need to keep working hard and just concentrate on putting more points on the board.

“Before this run of three wins were down the other end of the table.

“It’s still so tight and there’s still a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season.

“We know it’s going to be another very tough game against St Cadoc’s.

“But we’re going in full of confidence and I back us to beat anybody when we go into the game with the right attitude.”

Discipline has been something Burgh have had to address in recent weeks, with red cards and overall work-rate costing them precious points.

McKim is pleased the squad responded in the right way to a dressing down after their disappointing defeat to Rossvale.

And after tonight’s clash with St Cadoc’s, the Keanie Park side have a huge WoSFL Cup clash with Ayrshire giants Auchinleck Talbot at Beechwood Park to look forward to.

McKim said: “I slaughtered the boys a wee bit after the Rossvale game because I needed more commitment from them.

“We were lacking discipline and red cards were costing us. To be fair they’ve absolutely stepped up from that moment on.

“The hunger and desire is through the roof now and you need to have that resilience.

“You have to outwork the other team first and foremost and we’ve got back to doing that.

“This week’s games are exactly why we’re involved in football.

“They’re two great games against big teams with big budgets and it’s up to us to try and come out on top.

“I believe we can go and win both games.

“There’s no reason why we can’t if we play to the best level we are capable of.”
