Johnston Carmichael boosts leadership team with 16 promotions

Business advisory and accountancy firm Johnston Carmichael has announced eight new partner promotions, as part of the continued development of its leadership team and succession planning.

An additional eight employees have moved up to director level as the business seeks to ‘grow its own’ leaders and bolster key business lines amid rising client demand.

Two of the new partner promotions, Glasgow’s Campbell Cummings and Edinburgh-based Alan Hamilton are in corporate finance, and two are in tax – Suzanne Brownie, also based in the central belt, and Dundee’s Andrew McMillan.

Glasgow-based Michael McAllister becomes the firm’s first payroll partner, while his city colleague Neil Wilson in business advisory is also promoted.

The new group is completed by Edinburgh’s Richard Sutherland in financial services audit and Aberdeen’s Stuart Walker, who becomes partner in Johnston Carmichael Wealth, the firm’s financial planning arm.

The new directors are:

  • Kirsty Reynolds – Glasgow – business advisory
  • Philip Jamieson – Edinburgh – private client tax
  • Stewart King – Edinburgh - audit
  • Gavin Weanie – Aberdeen – corporate finance
  • Laura McLardy – Aberdeen – corporate tax
  • Mark McKenzie – Aberdeen – wealth
  • Gemma Thomson – Inverurie – business advisory
  • Judith MacKellar – Inverurie – business advisory

Andrew Walker, chief executive of Johnston Carmichael, said: “We have been clear about our commitment to fostering a culture where everyone is a leader of their work and their learning by enabling our people to work flexibly in a supportive environment that helps them perform to their very best every day.

“This group of leaders are ambassadors for this commitment and will help to grow our firm for the future building on our success and ensuring we remain a legacy firm where anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, can develop their career to become a senior leader of our business.”

The firm, which has 13 offices across the UK, has adopted a hybrid working model and introducing an in-house professional learning platform, the JC Academy, to support career progression.

Across 2022, Johnston Carmichael has promoted 137 people in total. It also welcomed three new partners - Si Mathavan, internal audit partner, Alex Nicholson, VAT and indirect tax partner, and Aileen Scott, corporate tax partner - bringing its partner group to 63.
