Johnson appoints Steve Barclay as Health Secretary amid scramble to replace ministers

STEVE Barclay will replace Sajid Javid as Health Secretary, Whitehall sources said.

The former chief secretary to the Treasury, and Theresa May’s previous Brexit secretary, is coming into the role following the resignation of Sajid Javid.

He has been serving as the Prime Minister's chief of staff since February.

Boris Johnson currently faces the biggest leadership crisis of his premiership after Javid stepped down and Rishi Sunak quit as chancellor, among a string of other resignations among parliamentary private secretaries.

The Prime Minister is now battling to remain in Number 10 as his handling of the row over scandal-hit former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher became the latest issue to raise questions over his judgment.

Tuesday night's twin resignations of Javid and Sunak mean Johnson’s position is now perilous, but Cabinet ministers including Alister Jack, Dominic Raab, Liz Truss, Michael Gove, Therese Coffey and Ben Wallace indicated they would be staying in the Government.

The Prime Minister’s fate may ultimately lie with backbench MPs if the Tory 1922 Committee’s rules are changed to allow another confidence vote within 12 months.

Allies of Johnson believe that is unlikely as it would leave any future leader with a “gun to their head”.
