Johnny Vegas says A&E turned away his elderly mum after three-hour ambulance wait

Johnny Vegas has claimed his mum was turned away from A&E after she had to wait three hours for an ambulance to arrive.

The comedian's mother Patricia appears to have been in and out of hospital this week, but tonight the emergency department was "full to capacity".

He took to Twitter to accuse the Conservative government and Prime Minister Boris Johnson of "neglect" and a "blatant drive to privatise" the NHS.

Johnny wrote: "3 hour wait on an ambulance but A&E had to close its doors, full to capacity. Why be angry at the incredible folk working under unbelievable stress?

"I remain grateful, my bitterness belongs to @BorisJohnson @Conservatives at your neglect of our @NHSuk & blatant drive to privatise."

An A&E doctor responded saying there is nothing staff can do as ambulances can't offload patients because it's full, but A&E can't clear the space because there are no beds to move patients to and there are no beds because there is nowhere to move those people using those beds.

Johnny responded: "Yet Georgina, they’d have us blame you for providing the best care you are allowed & funded to provide.

"How you manage to do it with such conscientious & ongoing commitment humbles me. They want patients & yourselves demoralised to the point that we surrender our @NHSuk Never!"

Earlier this week he had shared a picture with the nurses who had been looking after Patricia at St Helens and Whiston Hospital.

He said last Sunday: "Yet again, despite our smiles in the face of adversity, we owe @sthknhs 3D, @nhsemployers @NHSuk another massive debt of thanks for looking after Ma Vegas.

"Always we are humbled by your dedication to minding those nearest & dearest to us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts X."

Then on Tuesday he posted an image of his mum tucking into her hospital dinner to update fans on her health.

He wrote: "Thank you to all who have passed on ‘GET WELL SOON Ma Vegas’ messages and️ for @sthknhs @NHSuk @NHSStaffNews in general.

"We’re hoping she’ll be home tomorrow, thanks to the amazing care received & the speed with which she scoffed her chicken & stuffing butty this evening."
