Tributes have flooded in for drummer Jeremiah Green after the news broke that the musician died on New Year’s Eve, aged 45. His bandmate, Manchester’s Johnny Marr, is among those who have posted heartfelt messages on social media following the tragic news.
Jeremiah, a founding member of indie rock band Modest Mouse, died just days after his mother, Carol Namatame, revealed he’d been battling a stage four cancer diagnosis.
In a tribute, Johnny Marr called the percussionist the ‘most creative musician’ he’d ever met. The 59-year-old had worked with Jeremiah for Modest Mouse’s 2007 album ‘We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank’.

Sharing a throwback photo of Jeremiah, Johnny wrote: “The great Jeremiah Green. My friend, bandmate, and the most creative musician I ever met.”
Johnny’s son, Nile Marr, also from Manchester, added: “You were one of the most important men in my life. And the things your [sic] taught me are a huge part of who I am today. Love you.”
Jeremiah founded Modest Mouse in 1992 with lead singer and guitarist Isaac Brock and bassist Eric Judy. Over the years, the band underwent multiple changes in its members and managed to achieve mainstream success with fourth album Good News for People Who Love Bad News in 2004.
Sharing the news on their Instagram account, the band said: “I don’t know a way to ease into this: Today we lost our dear friend Jeremiah.
“He laid down to rest and simply faded out. I’d like to say a bunch of pretty words right now, but it just isn’t the time. These will come later, and from many people.
“Please appreciate all the love you give, get, have given, and will get. Above all, Jeremiah was about love. We love you.”
Ross Jarman, of The Cribs, who toured with Modest Mouse earlier this year, also paid tribute, commenting: “Hard to believe. Sending love to all of the @modestmouse family/ loved ones. Jeremiah, I’m grateful for the time we spent with you in 2022. Rest In Peace.”
