Johnny Depp, Phil Collins and Lenny Kravitz' offspring weigh in on 'nepo baby' label

Some of Hollywood's showbiz offspring have weighed in on life with famous parents as the term 'nepo baby' has become widely-discussed this week.

The focus on nepotism in Hollywood online comes following the viral Year of the Nepo Baby' cover, by New York Magazine.

Musician Lenny Kravitz, actor Johnny Depp, drummer Phil Collins and rapper Ice Cube's kids have all had something to say about the widely discussed 'nepo baby' status.

Referring to nepotism, the term broadly means people with power and influence giving their family members, mainly children, roles in their industry.

Swarms of celebrity children have now spoken out, defending their success and suggesting that their parents' influence had nothing to do with it.

Ice Cube's son O’Shea Jackson Jr, who made his on-screen debut portraying his famous father in Straight Outta Compton, slammed the viral term.

Taking to Twitter he claimed he "auditioned for two years before getting the role" and credited his "strong work ethic" for this acting career.

O'Shea said his dad "couldn’t hold my hand through my career" and that he "had to get my a*s up and make it work".

Seemingly landing on the fence of the 'nepo baby' argument, O'Shea explained that "none" of the above would have been possible "without the love of [his] father" and "the work" he put in to get his kids "to a place of opportunity".

"For me to ignore that or not accept and use as a guide would be foolish and disrespectful. I am grateful and I use his teachings daily," he said.

"It was out of the question that people would think that I use a free pass thanks to my name," she told Vogue France.

"I’m proud of my dad, but I wanted to be me, not just his daughter. For that, I was ready to wait to break through."

Johnny Depp and French singer Vanessa Paradis' daughter Lily-Rose Depp also joined in the conversation ahead of her new role in the HBO series The Idol alongside The Weeknd.

The 23-year-old slammed people calling her a 'nepotism baby' – saying that someone's "foot in the door" still needs "a lot of work".

"The internet seems to care a lot about that kind of stuff," she said in an interview with Elle. "People are going to have preconceived ideas about you or how you got there.

"I can definitely say that nothing is going to get you the part except for being right for the part."

She explained: "If somebody’s mum or dad is a doctor, and then the kid becomes a doctor, you’re not going to be like, 'Well, you’re only a doctor because your parent is a doctor.' It’s like, 'No, I went to medical school and trained'."

Also speaking out about the new term is The Batman star Zoë Kravitz who is the daughter of actress Lisa Bonet and actor-musician Lenny Kravitz.

Speaking of the topic in an interview with GQ, she explained: "It's completely normal for people to be in the family business.

"It's literally where last names came from. You were a blacksmith if your family was, like, the Black family," she said – seemingly defending her 'nepo baby' status.

Zoe spoke of her 'deep insecurity' as a teenager, not wanting to be in the entertainment business, just because her parents are famous.
