Johnny Depp joins TikTok – and gets over 3 million followers in one day

Johnny Depp has gained more than 3.9million followers after joining TikTok on Monday.

The 58-year-old actor – who won his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard last week – is yet to post anything on the social media platform.

But although he has only been on the app a matter of hours, he already has a blue tick verifying his profile.

He is yet to follow anyone else on TikTok, so the only information he has shared so far is his name, a photo and the words ‘Occupational Thespian”.

The former Pirates of the Caribbean star, who was dropped from the franchise over abuse allegations made by his ex-wife, is hoping to rebuild his movie career.

And is it thought him joining TikTok – where he received strong support from users during the trial – could help restore his public image further.

After six weeks of explosive testimony, which saw both Johnny and Amber – and even his ex-girlfriend Kate Moss - take the stand, their defamation trial finally came to an end last week.

It centred around a 2018 article his 36-year-old ex-wife wrote for Washington Post about her experiences as a domestic abuse survivor.

Although Johnny wasn’t named in the article, he claimed it was clear it was about him – and has always denied the allegations against him.

A jury ruled in favour of the Edward Scissorhands actor and he was awarded $10.35 million (£8.2 million) in damages.

However, Amber won on one count, successfully arguing her former husband’s press agent defame her by claiming her allegations were an “abuse hoax” aiming at capitalised on the #MeToo movement.

The jury awarded her $2 million (£1.5 million) in damages.

Johnny was not in court for the ruling, as he has been touring with musician Jeff Beck in the U, but in a statement thanked the jury for “giving me my life back”.

He said: “Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed. All in the blink of an eye.

“False, very serious and criminal allegations were levied at me via the media, which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me. It had already travelled around the world twice within a nanosecond and it had a seismic impact on my life and my career.

“And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.”

Depp went on to say his decision to pursue the case “was only made after considerable thought” and his goal was to “reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome”.

“Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that,” the actor said.

Following the verdict, Amber said she felt heartbroken by the ruling, adding she was “sadder still” that she had “lost a right” to “speak freely and openly”.
