John Travolta took a moment to honour his late son Jett on what would’ve been his 33rd birthday, posting a touching photo of the two of them when Jett was just a toddler. “Happy birthday Jett – I miss you so much! Love you forever!” he wrote, and fans quickly flooded the comments with heartfelt messages, calling Jett beautiful and offering John love and strength.
Jett was John’s first child with his late wife, Kelly Preston, born in 1992. Kelly sadly passed away in 2020 at the age of 57 after a private two-year battle with breast cancer. Jett died in 2009 during a family holiday in the Bahamas after suffering a seizure at the age of just 16.
John later revealed that Jett had been diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease at age two and was also on the autism spectrum, regularly experiencing seizures. The tragedy of losing a child so young has stayed with John, who has never shied away from remembering his son openly, often posting tributes each year, reported Hello! Magazine.
In 2010, John and Kelly welcomed their third child, Benjamin. During an emotional chat on Kevin Hart’s talk show, Hart to Heart, John opened up about how the death of Kelly affected Benjamin, who was just a young boy when he lost his mum.
“He said to me once, ‘Because mom passed away, I’m afraid you’re going to,’” John recalled. He explained how he tried to ease his son’s fears by being honest: “I said, ‘Well, it’s a very different thing.’” He then broke down the reality of life and death for Ben, telling him, “Nobody knows when they’re gonna go… your brother left at 16 – too young – your mother left at 57 – that was too young. But who’s to say?”
The Grease star also reminded his son of a hard truth: “I could die tomorrow. You could. I mean, anybody can. So let’s look at life… it’s part of life, you see? You don’t know exactly. You just do your best at trying to live the longest you can.”
Back in 2015, John also told Entertainment Tonight that he and Jett had shared a “very full life” together. “We did travel the world and he saw every place by the time he was that age,” he said. “But you know, you plan on a life that’s a lot longer for your child… and you always intend to go first.”
