John Terry vows to help fund Roman Abramovich flag at Stamford Bridge despite backlash

John Terry has vowed to help fund a gigantic banner at Stamford Bridge of Roman Abramovich to commemorate his services to Chelsea.

That is despite the Blues legend already coming under fire for his support of the Russian oligarch, who has been sanctioned by the UK government for his role in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Last month, Abramovich was hit with the punishment, which includes asset freezes and travel bans.

After it emerged that Abramovich had supported Vladimir Putin, the UK government were put under pressure to sanction the Chelsea owner to prevent any potential avenue of funding for Russia's war efforts. It has led to the Blues being put up for sale.

But Chelsea fans have been working together to commemorate the services of Abramovich at the club, whose almost-20 year stewardship of the club has catapulted them to widespread success domestically and in Europe.

Popular Chelsea fanzine Twitter account @onlyapound tweeted out a request for help to fund a huge Abramovich banner, writing: I don’t usually ask for contributions but I’m looking to raise £3200 for a 100ft x 50ft crowd surfer to thank Mr Abramovich for all he’s done for Chelsea. I’ll put £500 towards it. If you feel you can contribute, please PayPal fanzine@cfcuk.net. Any money over will go to charity"

And Terry, who made 717 appearances for the club over a 19-year career, got in contact to pledge his support. He tweeted back: "I'm in. The best owner."

There has been backlash to Terry's backing, while he has already been criticised for his support of Abramovich in the past. Last month, Labour MP Chris Bryant hit out at the former England international after his tweet of support.

Bryant, the MP for Rhondda, replied and said: "This is appalling. I think John Terry you should take this down ASAP. The people of Ukraine are being bombed, shelled and murdered while you celebrate Abramovich.”

And his most recent show of support has also forced a backlash, with one Twitter user replying: "Not too sure if John terry really knows what’s currently going on in Russia?"

Another wrote: "Read the room John." While another simply said: "Are you stupid."

Chelsea are currently in the process over finding a new owner with three parties left in the bid. Todd Boehly's consortium are seen as the favourites to take over from Abramovich.

But with no timeline on a proposed date and the summer transfer window fast approaching, it remains to be seen whether the new command will be involved in time.
