John Terry sends classy message to Cesar Azpilicueta after Chelsea injury vs Southampton

John Terry has sent a message to Cesar Azpilicueta after the Chelsea captain was stretchered off in the 1-0 loss to Southampton on Saturday. The Spaniard, who gave away the free-kick for James Ward-Prowse's goal before half-time, was caught flush in the head by the boot of Sekou Mara attempting an overhead kick.

He was down on the ground for 10 minutes whilst physios tended to him with players preferring to look away from the distressing scenes. Azpilicueta made his 500th appearance for the club last month and has suffered very few injuries during his time at Stamford Bridge but this was different.

As he was taken off it was straight to hospital rather than down the tunnel that he headed on a stretcher and although it appears that he was unconscious at one point he was able to raise a hand in gesture to Chelsea fans. His name was sung by the home crowd in support.

After the game Potter gave an update on his health, saying: "He's in hospital. So he's in the best place. He is conscious and I think he was speaking to his wife so that's good. Obviously really concerned, especially when it first happened. Hopefully, he is in the best place and we're monitoring.

"I think he was [unconscious]. So we need to take all the precautions we need to take now to make sure he's okay. Worrying. A horrible incident."

Meanwhile opposing interim manager Ruben Selles said: "I wish a speedy recovery to Azpi. I spoke to Willy Caballero to keep me updated with his state."

Former captain Terry has now taken to social media to deliver a message to his ex-teammate. "Delighted to hear our captain is all well (blue heart)," he posted with a picture of Azpilicueta.

Chelsea have one week before they next play, against Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next Sunday. Thiago Silva is expected to be back for that game after being rested by Potter against Saints, meaning he could take up the captaincy should Azpilicueta recquire further time out.
