John Terry responds to Frank Lampard's Chelsea return after answering SOS

Chelsea hero John Terry has wished Frank Lampard luck after the “unbelievable news” of his return to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues’ record goalscorer, the former midfielder was confirmed as the club’s interim boss until the end of the season on Thursday as the hunt for a more permanent successor to Graham Potter goes on. It marks his second managerial stint of the club having previously overseen an 18-month spell between July 2019 to January 2021.

Since then, he has struggled with Everton but that has not put off Todd Boehly and the rest of the Chelsea hierarchy with Lampard being parachuted in for the final nine games of the Premier League season. He will also oversee a Champions League quarter-final clash with Real Madrid.

Ahead of his second managerial debut for the club this weekend, Lampard has been sent a series of messages by former teammate Terry. The ex-defender replied “good luck mate” to the Blues’ official announcement on Instagram.

The 42-year-old then took to Twitter with a picture of Lampard holding the Champions League trophy with a message reading: “Good luck Lamps @ChelseaFC,” alongside a blue heart emoji.

Terry’s messages continued throughout the day as he responded to criticism. Immediately after Lampard’s return was confirmed, a Chelsea fan tweeted: “Delighted that Lamps is back and excited by the back room appointments. But please don’t add JT to that list.

“Club legend but Too much golf and not enough coaching experience to warrant inclusion. We’re past the days of barrack-room bombast. #chelsea #cfc”

Terry responded to that particular supporter and hit out at “nonsense”. He replied: “Also unbelievable news for everyone at Chelsea to have lamps [Lampard] back. I know how this works, Frank has his team and if I went into a job I would have mine.

“I won’t have people talk nonsense. Lamps is the best player in our history and this is just what we needed. Super Frank.”

Lampard will hope to have an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea take on struggling Wolves before they travel to Madrid on Wednesday evening. Speaking ahead of the match during his first press conference as Blues caretaker, he said: “It was an easy decision for me [to return] because this is my club.

“I’m also a very practical person. I’ve been on a different path since I left Chelsea but, to come back, as I’ve been asked, and be back here with a belief that I can help until the end of the season is really great. I’m delighted to get the opportunity and I’m thankful.”

Whilst Lampard will remain in charge until the end of the season, a number of names have been linked with being appointed in the summer including a whole host of former managers such as Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Carlo Ancelotti.
