Former Chelsea and England defender John Terry was left confused as to why Karim Benzema's goal was disallowed in the UEFA Champions League final.
Liverpool dominated much of the first half, with Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois keeping the score level with a string of saves. With minutes left of the opening 45 minutes, the Spanish champions thought they were ahead when Karim Benzema pounced on a loose ball in the box to stroke home.
But VAR reversed the decision due to the French striker being in an offside position, despite the ball coming off Liverpool's Fabinho in the process. Former Premier League referee Peter Walton explained on BT Sport that the decision was made because the ball deflected off the Brazilian and it was not a deliberate pass.

That clarification wasn't enough for Terry, who took to social media to question why VAR intervened in what looked like a clear goal for the Spanish side.
"How is that not a goal?" Terry tweeted. "I’m glad Peter Walton cleared it up for us The rule clearly doesn’t make sense because when would a Liverpool player ever intentionally play Benzema the ball?
"The fact it’s come off a Liverpool player surely means it’s a Goal?"
Speaking at half-time, Walton said: "The ball deflects off Fabinho. Because of that, Benzema is offside. If Fabinho deliberately played the ball, he is onside. However, it is a deflection, so he is offside."
