John Swinney should give Donald Trump his own tartan, says Tory MSP

A TORY MSP has said that John Swinney should give Donald Trump his own tartan.

In a column for The Scotsman, Murdo Fraser said it would be an “inexpensive but symbolic move” that could ultimately help boost the Scottish economy.

It comes after Donald Trump was sworn in for his second term as US president on Monday.

The MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife (below) said: “In our national interests, I would expect Scottish political representatives to be reaching out to the new president with the hand of friendship, and looking at how Scottish business might benefit from closer transatlantic links."

He added: “There have been few US presidents with such strong Scottish connections as Trump, and the opportunity to exploit them should not be sacrificed on the altar of misplaced moral superiority.”

Trump's mother Mary Anne MacLeod was born in the small village of Tong in the Isle of Lewis before making the move stateside.

The US president also owns several golf courses in Scotland.

“Perhaps the Scottish Government could start with a small gesture towards the new president,” Fraser suggested.

“The Official Scottish Register of Tartans does not disclose the existence of a Donald Trump tartan, although one does exist for his daughter Ivanka.”

The Tory MSP then said it would be a “simple matter” for the Scottish Government to propose a new Donald Trump tartan.

He went on to say that it could be presented to Trump on his next visit to Scotland by the First Minister.

“It would be an inexpensive but symbolic move which might well reap significant rewards for the Scottish economy,” Fraser said.

Trump’s son Eric previously suggested that his father would visit Scotland later this year for the opening of a new golf course in Aberdeenshire.
