John Stones in Man City training but no Ruben Dias ahead of Atletico Madrid

John Stones trained with Manchester City ahead of their game with Atletico but there was still no sign of Ruben Dias.

Stones handed Pep Guardiola an injury concern during the international break when he pulled up in the warm-up of England's friendly with Switzerland and eventually left the camp early with a groin injury that was ultimately deemed too risky to play him at Burnley on Saturday. Nathan Ake stepped in and played well alongside Aymeric Laporte, although Stones was with the group on Monday afternoon to suggest he could return for the Champions League.

"He was not injured but he had some disturbance hitting the ball,” Guardiola said after the Burnley game. “He took antibiotics in the last days and he had an inflammation. He's not injured but he wasn't perfect and I didn't want to take the risk.”

Dias is facing an uphill battle to play in any of City’s next four games after missing another session with the team. The Portugal defender has been out for a month with a hamstring injury and City’s medical staff fear that if he tries to come back too early he could end his season prematurely.

Apart from Dias and Cole Palmer - whose injury struggles continue - all other first-team players trained as well as youngsters including Morgan Rogers, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Bournemouth and could not find a new club in the January window. Guardiola can call upon 23 players for Tuesday's match with 12 substitutes allowed in the Champions League, although given the small nature of City's squad he has not always filled the bench this season.

Full training squad: Ederson, Steffen, Carson, Walker, Cancelo, Egan-Riley, Mbete, Stones, Laporte, Zinchenko, Ake, Lavia, Rodri, Fernandinho, Bernardo, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Mahrez, Rogers, Mebude, Foden, Sterling, Grealish, Jesus
