John Souttar stays at Hearts as Rangers bound defender made to wait for Ibrox switch

John Souttar will spend the rest of the season with Hearts as the transfer window slammed shut without a deal being agreed with Rangers.

The Scotland international has signed a pre-contract to move to the Premiership champions, who tried to get a deal done in January.

Two offers for Souttar were booted out by the Jambos, including a £400k bid on the last day of the window.

And Rangers opted not to raise their bid for the centre-back as the transfer deadline passed with Souttar still at Tynecastle.

Gio van Bronckhorst added Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey to his squad on the final day, with the Welshman joining on a six month loan.

Hearts manager Robbie Neilson has previously stated that he'd have no qualms with keeping Souttar, despite his having agreed a move to Rangers.

He said: "Hopefully we'll keep John.

"He's a top player for us and one of our key players so unless anything changes today, I'd expect him to be ready for tomorrow night.

"At this moment in time he's playing in the game, we'll assess that as the day goes along.

"It'll come down to the board, to be honest with you. The sporting director and myself spoke this morning.

"If there's an offer coming in, we'd like it to be as soon as possible.

"If it's later on, we'll need to decide what it is and if it suits us or not."
