John Murtough lists two reasons why Manchester United signed Marcel Sabitzer

John Murtough has praised the signing of Marcel Sabitzer after the player joined Manchester United on loan from Bayern Munich.

Christian Eriksen sustained an ankle injury against Reading in the FA Cup at the weekend and scans confirmed the player is set to be sidelined for up to four months, which led to the club scanning the loan market to offset his absence.

Sabitzer was identified as an ideal short-term solution and United moved swiftly to begin talks with Bayern Munich, which has seen the 28-year-old move to Old Trafford on loan until the end of the season on January deadline day.

There is no option to make the deal permanent included and Sabitzer could make his debut against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Murtough, who oversees recruitment as football director, said he was "pleased" to sign the midfielder on loan.

“Marcel is a player that we have watched for a long time," a statement from Murtough read. "The opportunity arose quickly, and we knew that he was someone with the ability and character to make an impact.

"He adds further quality to our squad and experience to the dressing room, and all of us are pleased to be welcoming him to Manchester United.”
