John Mitchell faces a reunion with England at next year’s men’s Rugby World Cup after agreeing to become Japan’s new defence coach.

Mitchell previously held that role with England, but he left in July of last year to become Premiership side Wasps’ attack coach.

The 57-year-old has now been granted permission to combine the two roles and he will link up with Japan for their summer Test matches.

Mitchell will also have a reunion with Eddie Jones and England next year, as Japan are in England’s pool for the World Cup in France, along with Argentina, Samoa and another qualifier from the Americas yet to be confirmed.

“This is a great opportunity to add value to Japan winning test matches through growing their defence and understanding how it plays a critical part in the way we want to attack,” said Mitchell.

“I would also like to thank Wasps for their support and co-operation in allowing me this opportunity.”
