John McGinn set to face Celtic after key Unai Emery update

John McGinn looks set to face Celtic next week after Unai Emery recently confirmed the midfielder has returned to Aston Villa training.

The Scotland international pulled up with a hamstring injury in his side's 2-1 win over Leicester City at the start of 2025.

He hasn't played in the three weeks since, but Emery was on hand to provide a brief update on his fitness yesterday. He said [Birmingham Live]: "John McGinn is starting to train with the group, he’s working with us."

McGinn's return provides a timely boost for Villa ahead of Wednesday evening's Battle of Britain.

The Birmingham side, though, still have a trio of key players expected to be out for the showdown: "[Amadou] Onana is still working alone," said Emery.

"Ross Barkley is still not available, and Pau [Torres] will need more time to try to be close with us."

Celtic travel down south already secure of a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Their 1-0 win over BSC Young Boys on Wednesday evening was far from comfortable, although Brendan Rodgers' men got over the line and now head to Villa Park free of any pressure.

While Villa have their injury problems, the Parkhead side will be without the suspended Daizen Maeda. Kyogo Furuhashi won't play either, with the striker's transfer to Rennes set to be confirmed imminently.
