John Lynch: Keeping Trey Lance most likely option for 49ers

It doesn’t sound like 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is going anywhere despite a flurry of reports Wednesday that indicated the club would be looking to move its No. 3 pick from the 2021 draft.

General manager John Lynch on Thursday hopped on with Murph and Mac on KNBR in San Francisco to give an update on the 49ers QB room, and said Lance would be staying with the team in all likelihood.

“I think that’s the most likely option,” Lynch said. “As I said, we’re very happy with Trey. That’s probably the most likely option is that he’s here. If we could find a landing spot for Trey that is a really good one for him, and works for our organization, that’s not something we’d not turn a blind eye to. But that’s not where our focus is right now. I think our focus is on Trey getting back here, and us being the best football team. We’re getting close to Pittsburgh and that’s kinda where we’re at. There’s viable options for all players, but right now Trey’s a part of our team and we’re gonna move forward with that in mind.”

Lynch also alluded to some of the injury woes that befell the team last season and how their goal was to maintain good depth under center. Moving on from Lance would push Brandon Allen into the No. 3 QB spot, which is what NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero on Wednesday said had already happened with Lance sitting behind Allen on the depth chart. The 49ers GM though said that heading into the preseason finale, Lance is still third on the depth chart.

“Yeah I think that’s the plan,” Lynch said about Lance playing in Friday’s preseason finale. “He’s our number 3 quarterback as we stand right now, I think that would be the expectation that we see him after Sam’s done tomorrow and we’ll look to finish our preseason in a really good way versus the Chargers.”

If a trade materializes for Lance where the 49ers feel they’re getting good value back for him, then this could all change. Those trade offers don’t seem to be coming in though, which means Lance sticking around is all but certain.
