JOHN LUNDSTRAM was left heartbroken – not just for himself, but also the fans - after Rangers’ cruel Europa League final penalty shoot-out loss to Eintracht Frankfurt.
The midfielder has been a key player for the Ibrox side in Europe this season but was left gutted as Rangers fell agonisingly short of European glory in Seville.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side made their fans dream in the run-up to the final with an incredible journey to Seville, but in the end it was just a step too far.
“We are heartbroken,” said Lundstram. “It’s so hard to take to lose on penalties.
“In the 120 minutes I don’t think both teams were great and we could have played better.
“But it’s hard to play on a big stage like this, it’s nervous for everyone.
“I am just severely disappointed to lose on penalties.
“It’s a lottery - anyone could have missed.”
There was no shame in defeat with the Rangers players left dead on their feet after 120 minutes in the sweltering Seville heat.
But Lundstram couldn’t help but feel for the huge travelling Rangers support who had used any mode of transport possible to back their team in Spain.
“I’m disappointed to let everyone down. They have all come over to Seville and we had three quarters of the stadium.
“It’s just heartbreaking. We are just devastated - the boys put in so much graft.
“We can all be super proud to have got this far but I am so heartbroken for the fans and everyone.”
Ryan Kent went close in the final minutes proving how near Rangers were to lifting the trophy, but it wasn't to be.
Lundstram added: “The chance at the end was the point where we could have won it.
“But what can you do? It was a world-class save.”
