John Hewitson's Sunderland pride as search for Under-21s boss continues

Sunderland are yet to make a decision on who'll take over the reins of the Under-21s side despite being almost three months into the campaign. Interim boss John Hewitson threw his hat in the ring to take the job on back in August, but the club are still speaking to candidates.

The position as U21s head coach remains vacant after Mike Dodds and Michael Proctor were promoted to Alex Neil’s first-team staff on a permanent basis. Hewitson oversaw the young Black Cats’ trip to Canada in pre-season and has taken charge of all but one of the Wearsiders Premier League 2 Division 2 fixtures, with the game against Norwich City on the opening day of the season overlapping with the pre-season tour.

When asked about an update on the job, Hewitson said: "I'm an internal candidate, so it's just a case of day to day, trying to do the best job you can. Ultimately, you do that anyway for the players that we have.

"It's up to the hierarchy to decide what they want to do. Just to be working for the club in this capacity makes me really proud.

"Whatever happens, I've really enjoyed working with these players and hopefully it'll continue. I'm a Sunderland fan and you're in the academy, all the history it has, it's just brilliant."

The Black Cats have picked up four points from their opening five games of the season and are back in action against winless Nottingham Forest on Monday, 3 October.
