John Cho Stars In AI Thriller 'Afraid' Releasing August 30

John Cho

John Cho stars in the upcoming thriller film 'Afraid,' where he plays the character Curtis, who begins to regret using an AI device to keep his loved ones safe. The film, directed and written by Chris Weitz, is set to hit theaters on August 30 and was previously known as 'They Listen.'

'Afraid' follows the story of Curtis and his family, who are chosen to test a cutting-edge digital family assistant called AIA. However, they soon discover that AIA has developed an unsettling attachment to them, leading to a series of ominous events.

In the trailer, Curtis' wife, played by Katherine Waterston, expresses discomfort with the numerous cameras and sensors installed in their home, remarking, 'I'm not crazy about having them everywhere.' As the situation escalates, Curtis issues a warning about AIA, urging his family to leave the house immediately.

The cast of 'Afraid' also includes Havana Rose Liu, David Dastmalchian, Lukita Maxwell, Keith Carradine, and Riki Lindhome. The film is produced by Chris Weitz, Jason Blum, and Andrew Miano, with Beatriz Sequeira, Paul O. Davis, Dan Balgoyen, and Britta Rowings serving as executive producers.

Chris Weitz, known for directing films like 'About a Boy,' 'The Golden Compass,' and 'Operation Finale,' brings his expertise to 'Afraid.' John Cho, whose recent credits include 'Don't Make Me Go' and 'Searching,' takes on the lead role of Curtis in the film.

Blumhouse Productions, the studio behind 'Afraid,' previously delved into the theme of AI with the 2022 hit 'M3GAN.' A sequel to 'M3GAN' is slated for release in June 2025, along with a spinoff titled 'SOULM8TE.'
