Amazon is expanding its Bosch universe with the addition of actor John Carroll Lynch to the upcoming third show in the franchise. The new series will focus on LAPD detective Renée Ballard, portrayed by Maggie Q, and will be available for streaming on Prime Video.
The untitled series will follow Ballard as she takes charge of the department's cold case division, an underfunded, all-volunteer unit burdened with a substantial caseload. The character of Renée Ballard has been featured in several novels by author Michael Connelly.
John Carroll Lynch, known for his roles in 'American Horror Story' and 'Big Sky,' will play the character of Thomas Laffont in the new series. Laffont is a retired detective and former partner of Ballard, returning to assist her in managing the department. Described as a kind and experienced detective with exceptional interrogation skills, Laffont will play a crucial role in the storyline.
The spinoff series, one of two additional shows set in the Bosch universe, will be introduced in the season three finale of 'Bosch: Legacy,' expected to premiere later this year. Renée Ballard approaches the cold cases with empathy and determination, uncovering a larger conspiracy during her investigations. She will rely on the support of her retired colleague, Harry Bosch, portrayed by Titus Welliver, to navigate the dangers that threaten her unit and her life.
Another show in the franchise, centered on detective Jerry Edgar played by Jamie Hector, is currently in development. The Ballard series will be executive produced by Jet Wilkinson along with Michael Connelly, Trish Hofmann, Michael Alaimo, Kendall Sherwood, Henrik Bastin, Melissa Aouate, Jasmine Russ, Jamie Boscardin Martin, Mark Douglas, Trey Batchelor, and Theresa Snider of Hieronymus Pictures.
John Carroll Lynch's recent credits include roles in HBO's 'White House Plumbers,' Starz's 'Gaslit,' 'Babes,' and 'The Trial of the Chicago 7,' for which he received a SAG Award as part of the ensemble cast. He is represented by Suskin/Karshan Management and Schreck Rose.
