John Bishop 'properly thrown' as he explains Scouse accent on DNA Journey

John Bishop has explained the reason behind his strong Scouse accent.

The comedian appeared on tonight's edition of DNA Journey. The 56-year-old traced his family history alongside Downton Abbey star, Hugh Bonneville, on the latest episode of the popular ITV programme.

John was born in Liverpool but his family moved to Winsford when he was young and he grew up in the Cheshire town. John said he was "properly thrown" as the first location they travelled to on tonight's show was his hometown.

The comic shared how the family made the move the because they were told their house was getting demolished and given a range of towns to move to. John said many of his neighbours made the same move, which led to a strong Scouse community in the area.

He told Hugh: "That's why I've got a strong accent because it was their, sort of, identity." John explained how it seemed like "miles away" when his family made the move to Cheshire.

However, he was blown away to discover his distant ancestor, Patrick Reardon, worked on the salt mines in Winsford. John's great, great, great, grandad was originally from Ireland and made the move to Liverpool before relocating to the town.

John explained how he always felt an affinity to Ireland and was amazed to discover his roots are indeed in the Emerald Isle. John and Hugh discovered a spooky connection as they found their ancestors worked on the same road in Dublin and marched together in support of workers' rights.
