John Amos and his son are creating a docuseries about his life and career

John Amos and his son K.C. have been working on a docuseries

In his over 50-year-long acting career, John Amos has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. From his groundbreaking role as one of television's first Black patriarchs on the 1970s sitcom Good Times to his Emmy-nominated performance as an adult Kunta Kinte in the iconic miniseries Roots, Amos has captivated audiences with his talent and presence. Throughout his career, he has graced both the small and big screens, appearing in popular shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The West Wing, and Two and a Half Men, as well as movies like Let's Do It Again and Coming to America.

Yet, there is one milestone that Amos has yet to achieve – starring in a docuseries that explores his own remarkable life and career. However, that is about to change as Amos and his filmmaker son K.C. have spent the past two and a half years working on exactly that.

The father-son duo has embarked on an ambitious journey to create a docuseries that delves deep into their individual and shared careers. Their project has taken them to various locations around the world, including Ireland, Portugal, Jamaica, and Monrovia, where they have engaged with fans and collected stories. Through this series, they aim to provide what John describes as 'the definitive explanation and the definitive description as to who we are.'

The upcoming docuseries, titled 'America's Dad,' pays homage to Amos's portrayal of James Evans, the beloved father figure from Good Times who resonated with audiences across the nation. The moniker reflects the countless encounters Amos has had with fans who have expressed how he became a paternal figure in their lives. This includes people from all walks of life, regardless of race or background, who have found solace and inspiration in his portrayal.

Amos is deeply moved by the impact he has had on such a diverse range of fans and is especially gratified that his appeal transcends race. He believes that a real father figure speaks to all young individuals, regardless of their ethnic background. With his docuseries, Amos not only aims to share his experiences but also hopes to provide positive guidance to younger generations and help them navigate the challenges they may face.

While the project highlights the incredible bond between John and K.C., it is worth noting that being a father also comes with its complexities. Last year, Amos's daughter Shannon accused K.C. of elder abuse against their father, causing a public rift within the family. John, however, asserts that despite their differences, love still exists within the family. He believes that their love for one another will ultimately triumph, and they will be reunited in a harmonious relationship at some point.

As K.C. reminisces about his childhood, he fondly recalls moments of joy and laughter shared with his father. He describes John as someone who thoroughly enjoyed having fun and engaging in playful activities. From donning an African mask during sleepovers to lift his son and his friends up to the ceiling, to his tough-love approach when communicating, John's parenting style was unique and impactful.

Through their upcoming documentary, John and K.C. not only aim to capture their own journey but also hope to deepen their bond as father and son. The project allows them to document moments of inspiration and share them with both young and older men who may find fragments of their own experiences within their relationship.

As fans eagerly await the release of 'America's Dad,' they can anticipate delving into the life and career of an actor who has not only graced their screens but also left an enduring mark on their hearts. Through his work, John Amos has not only shattered barriers but has also become a symbol of inspiration for millions. With this upcoming docuseries, audiences will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the man behind the iconic roles and the profound impact his work has had on countless lives.
