Former NL MVP Joey Votto has recently announced that he has reached an agreement on a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, his hometown team. The 40-year-old first baseman entered free agency after the conclusion of his lengthy tenure with the Cincinnati Reds, where he spent 17 seasons.
Votto expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to make his way back to the Major Leagues, particularly highlighting the significance of doing so while donning the uniform of the Toronto Blue Jays. The team, however, has not made an official statement regarding this development at the moment.
In the previous season, Votto recorded a batting average of .202 along with 14 home runs and 38 RBIs in 65 games. His season debut was delayed until June 19 due to a surgical procedure on his left biceps and rotator cuff, which took place 10 months earlier.
Throughout his illustrious career, Votto has been selected to the All-Star Game six times and was honored with the NL MVP award in 2010. He boasts a career batting average of .294, with 356 home runs, 1,144 RBIs, and an impressive .409 on-base percentage across 2,056 games.
It is worth noting that Cincinnati opted not to exercise Votto's $20 million option for the 2024 season, paving the way for his transition to a new chapter with the Toronto Blue Jays.
