It’s a generally well-known fact that most athletes will eat more than the average human being.
The reasons are pretty obvious. When you’re more active than the average person, you’re going to need to eat more than the average person. It’s just simple math, really.
But Joey Bosa is his eating to another level right now.
The Chargers’ star linebacker is reportedly eating nearly 5,000 calories per day, according to a new story from ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry, in an effort to bulk up for next season.
Yes, you read that correctly. To be more specific, Bosa is reportedly eating between 4,500 to 5,000 calories each and every day. That’s a lot of food, y’all.
There’s a specific reasoning behind it, according to Thiry’s reporting. Let’s dive into it.
Why is Joey Bosa eating that much?
Apparently, Bosa is trying to bulk up for next season. He played the 2022-23 NFL season at 250 pounds. That was down from his previous weight the year before where he floated between 265 pounds and 270 pounds.
Now, he’s apparently trying to get to 280. That’s why he’s eating everything to get there.
Why in the world does Joey Bosa need to do this? He's already pretty good, right?
Yes, he’s already pretty good. But Bosa apparently feels like he lost a bit of power in his game because of his losing weight.
Here’s more from Thiry.
“I specifically tried to really eat good and put some weight on this offseason, get back to my weight I was at a few years ago, where I could really use my power,” Bosa explained after a training camp practice. “Really handle guys in the run and be more effective in that part of the game.”
On top of that, Bosa missed 12 games to injury last year. Surely, he’s trying to make sure he’ll be as durable as possible next season.
So what's he doing to gain this weight back?
He’s eating, y’all. He’s eating a lot.
Bosa has been going about his regular summer workout schedule, but he’s also worked with a dietician and a nutritionist to make sure that he’s eating enough to bulk up.
Bosa reportedly eats five to six meals per day to gain his weight back. He’s also snacking consistently.
Yes, I’m totally jealous.
Will all of this work for Bosa?
This is one of those situations where we’ll have to wait and see. Bosa is certainly doing the job of bulking up, but what’s going to make it matter is if he can stay healthy on the field and continue to be as good as he has been.
That’s not something we can possibly know right now. So keep this in the back of your mind when you watch the Chargers this season.
