Joey Barton implies he's better than Scott Brown as he aims thinly-veiled dig

They may have only crossed paths briefing in their playing careers.

But it's quite clear that there is still no love lost between Joey Barton and Scott Brown.

The pair faced off in an Old Firm derby once in 2016, with Brown's Celtic team running riot against Barton who turned out for the Light Blues.

There were some choice words said between them in the run-up to that game and during it.

Now, they're rivals in the dugout in England's League One.

Their sides - Bristol Rovers and Fleetwood Town - faced off at the weekend, with Barton's Rovers side prevailing as 2-1 winners.

But the ex-Manchester City midfielder couldn't just leave it at that.

Speaking to the media, he taunted his former club and their manager over their "kick it long" tactics.

Barton even suggested Fleetwood fans would be "disappointed" that he is no longer their boss following his sacking back in January 2021.

The 40-year-old said: "I spoke to the boys at half-time and said just settle down and keep passing the ball.

"I thought we were good value for the victory, the wind here is a factor and the first half we were into it and it made it tricky as they kick it long and want to pin you in, they are quite effective at that.

"I think we were the better side on the afternoon, we were the only side trying to play football. They are effective at what they do.

"But Fleetwood fans must be disappointed Joey Barton isn't their manager because we were miles better football team than they are seeing at the minute. It's Fleetwood's loss and Bristol Rovers' gain."

Meanwhile, Scott Arfield has revealed that he would love to chance to return to Falkirk.

The Rangers midfielder started his career at the Bairns and enjoyed varied success at the now League One club.

Arfield left the Bairns in 2010 and moved to Huddersfield for £400,000 - but the former Canada international would love a return before he walks away from football, whether it be as a player, coach, or manager.

The 34-year-old penned a one-year extension last season to play his fifth campaign with the Gers this term.

With the summer approaching in the next couple of months, he is one of a number of players at Ibrox with contracts expiring.

So while his immediate future remains unclear, Arfield has addressed what he would like to do at some stage.
