Wilson shot just wide early in the second half as Newcastle restarted on the front foot. Man United thought they had taken the lead when Ronaldo scored, but was rightly ruled offside.
Newcastle made a triple substitution, with Chris Wood, Joe Willock and Matt Targett all coming on with just over 10 minutes to play. Miguel Almiron went close to breaking the deadlock, but his effort from Ryan Fraser's low corner went over.
The home side had the best opportunity of the game when Marcus Rashford rounded Nick Pope and played it back to Fred who shot over under pressure from Schar.
Here's how Lee Ryder rated the Newcastle United players.
Nick Pope 8
A clean sheet and a couple of key saves at Old Trafford is nothing to be sniffed at.
Kieran Trippier 8
Usual efficiency down the right hand side and a number of fine interceptions.
Fabian Schar 9
Ran himself into the ground. Suffered one or two knocks before going off. Rock solid.
Sven Botman 8
Another tidy display by the Dutchman. Yet to taste defeat in a Toon shirt.
Dan Burn 7
Gave it everything. Played with more caution following yellow card.
Joelinton 8
Ran the show at times in midfield. Two efforts against the woodwork.
Bruno Guimaraes 8
Another excellent display by the Brazil ace. Worked hard before coming off.
Sean Longstaff 8
An excellent display in midfield. Didn't let much through. A key challenge in the second half to deny Antony.
Miguel Almiron 8
A better first half than second. But still a constant threat as goal rush comes to an end.
Jacob Murphy 6
Not quite the same impact as the previous two games. Just one tame shot on target.
Callum Wilson 6
A penalty shout in the first half and an effort that was screwed wide early in the second half. Nothing really fell his way.
