Joel Piroe has turned into the superstar Swansea City never expected as he proves the doubters wrong

Google's search function took a pasting as Swansea City fans frantically looked up the man who had just emerged as a transfer target for their club.

Some were left scratching their heads, while others swiftly took the opportunity to stick the boot into tyhe club's recruitment department after gaining their first answers online.

To an extent, the concerns were understandable. The element of unknown certainly didn't help.

Joel Piroe had netted just two goals in 20 appearances for Sparta Rotterdam during the 2019/20 season.

What only more in-depth research would show was that the Wijchen-born star's league record of two strikes in 18 outings came at a rate of a goal every 192.5 minutes, or little more than a goal every other game.

Exactly a half of his league appearances for the club were no more than 15 minutes in length which fully highlights how difficult it was for Piroe to make an impact.

At first glance, the Dutchman's second season in senior football did little to whet the appetite either, but, once again, delve deeper and the potential becomes clearer.

His return of three strikes in 14 first team outings for PSV Eindhoven during the 2020/21 campaign came at a rate of a goal every 72.3 minutes.

The Swans had done their due diligence and were sufficiently convinced to fork out more than £1m to bring the raw frontman to Wales.

A late change in manager hardly helped Piroe to settle, and Russell Martin himself recently hinted at his concerns over the forward's attitude very early on in the season.

"The first chat we had, and I think Joel will tell you, it wasn't an overly positive one," the head coach said after the recent 2-0 win at West Brom.

"There's a certain level of intensity we expect that he didn't bring in the first week or two. I've been honest about that, and so has Joel."

But goals against Reading and Stoke City before a winner that sent the limbs of around 2,400 Jacks into every unimaginable direction at Bristol City showed Piroe had quickly taken on board the methods of his new boss.

Thick black smoke now regularly pours from the away end to signal another Piroe party, and the forward himself duly responds by raising his right hand, firmly fixed into a phone-shaped gesture, up to his ear.

When asked what the Swans would be getting in signing the forward, Dutch football journalist Tim van Duijn told WalesOnline last summer: "A very dedicated and talented striker from PSV that is dying to show what he's made of."

His record for someone so young and new to the Championship is quite simply astonishing.

Piroe's tally of 14 Championship strikes is the joint-fifth best in the league this term - with his header against Fulham meaning he now has 16 goals in all competitions in his debut campaign at the club.

He boasts a shot accuracy of 67%, the best of any of the league's top 10 marksmen while Wales star Brennan Johnson - who has 10 goals to his name in the Championship this season - is the only player younger than Piroe to reach double figures for second tier strikes this term.

He's also the only man to hit double figures in the league to be tasting life in the Championship for the first time this season, so the adaptation required has been immense to say the least.

Let's not forget, Piroe came into a club that saw players such as Andre Ayew, Conor Hourihane, Marc Guehi, Connor Roberts and Freddie Woodman depart while a completely new style of play was, and continues to be implemented, meaning even those who remained from two successive play-off campaigns were adapting, making the forward's efforts all the more impressive.

Now operating in a deeper role, Piroe - who has also chipped in with four assists this season - is continuing to bulge the net while also helping fellow summer signing Michael Obafemi to make his mark after a tough start.

To their credit, many of those who initially poked fun at Swansea's swoop for Piroe have admitted their delight at being emphatically proven wrong during the course of the campaign. Humble pie has never tasted as sweet.

Those in the recruitment arm of the club deserve a major hat tip, because replacing a former Premier League, Champions League and World Cup player in Andre Ayew on such a modest budget was quite simply a daunting task.

Martin can only hope that the former Netherlands Under-20 international is still at SA1 as the Swans aim to launch an assault on the play-off places next term following a full summer of work on the training ground.
