Joel Matip shares Trent Alexander-Arnold theory after Liverpool fightback at West Ham

Joel Matip believes the only thing Liverpool can do between now and the end of the season is continue to put pressure on the sides above them.

Liverpool's win over West Ham United on Wednesday, thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Matip, was their third in a row in the Premier League and lifted them up to sixth, with a game in hand on fifth-placed Aston Villa.

However, the Reds are still seven points off Manchester United in fourth, who have played a game less. Next up for Jurgen Klopp’s side is a home game against Tottenham on Sunday, and Matips believes it is important his side continue to put pressure on their rivals.

He said: "This is the only thing we can do: put pressure on the opponents. For this we have to play the next game and get three points there."

And when asked about the key to Liverpool’s comeback, Matip revealed: "To stay calm, even after they scored, we stayed calm and tried to play our way.

"And then with a brilliant finish from Cody, it was great from Trent before, a nice ball in between. We kept on playing, and in the end we had a few opportunities, and the second one went in."

Before the defender added: "It’s always hard when you are 1-0 down but especially the midfield with Trent, who stayed so calm with the ball—it was really nice to watch how they play. [We] just kept on playing, and that helped us through the 90 minutes."
