Joel Matip reveals loudest Liverpool teammate and why he avoids the showers straight after a match

Joel Matip has confirmed who is his loudest teammate in the Liverpool dressing room - and why he doesn't get in the shower straight after a match.

The Cameroon centre-back, who has won five major honours with the Reds, has been speaking to Premier League broadcaster Sky Sports about his matchday routines.

And when asked who was the biggest voice in the Reds' dressing room, the 31-year-old was in little doubt. He said: "I would say Hendo (Jordan Henderson), Milly (James Milner). Milly for sure. He is always quite sharp."

Matip revealed that his typical pre-match meal will consist of tomato and pasta, followed by rice pudding. The 6ft 5" centre-back prefers to zone out on his way to the stadium, listening to music, so rather than name a best teammate to sit next to, instead revealed that he prefers to sit on his own.

"My kind of music is mixed - RnB, Pop, House - a little bit of everything," he added.

Matip joined the Reds from German side Schalke in 2016 and has gone on to make 168 appearances for the club to date. Although he insists that he doesn't get nervous before games, the special feeling for performing on a matchday still exists.

He said: "I would not call it nerves. It's just like a special kind of tension. I don't want to lose it because this presents opportunity to play in this league, to play for this club and to play in front of so many people. So, it's a special kind of tension but I would not call it nervous."

The former Cameroon international scored three times for the Reds last season, but confirmed that he does not have any pre-determined goal celebrations up his sleeve. "I never, I should maybe because it doesn't look too good when I score, but I never really put thought into it because I don't score to often to be honest!" he added.

Once the 90 minutes is up, Matip prefers to jump straight into an ice bath instead of the shower. Otherwise, he finds himself sweating again half an hour after hosing himself down. When it comes to an ideal post-match meal he can't resist another Italian favourite, Pizza, but stopped short of revealing his favourite toppings.

England is currently baking in record temperatures but that won't deter Matip from his fondness for football accessories. "I am one of the first to wear gloves and not always he in the winter," he said.

Jurgen Klopp was delivered a blow this week, when he confirmed that Matip was withdrawn from training on Friday with a groin issue. It puts major doubts over whether he will be available for the visit of Crystal Palace to Anfield on Monday evening.
