Joel Embiid Could Request Trade If 76ers Fall Short in Two Key Areas, Says Insider

The 76ers’ trade that sent James Harden to the Clippers had to feel like a weight lifted on the franchise’s shoulders. But while it may clear up the issue of figuring out how to use a disgruntled star, there’s still a possibility the franchise could face another huge issue in the near future—a potential Joel Embiid trade request.

If the 76ers are unable to maximize the assets acquired in the Harden trade, and they suffer another early playoff exit, Embiid could ask for a trade prior to next season, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“At this particular time, I’ll say that Joel is monitoring the situation and how everything goes. Right now, they’re optimistic because Maxey is playing well, and they have a bunch of role players who can help them out,” Pompey told Michael Scotto on the Hoops Hype Podcast. "If Morey doesn’t do anything with this and they suffer another second-round loss, I could see Embiid asking for a trade heading into next year."

The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly aren’t in the clear of a potential Joel Embiid trade request after the season.

While Philadelphia is off to a solid start to the new season behind the play of Embiid and budding star Tyrese Maxey, the franchise isn't clear of any potential fireworks just yet.

The 76ers are 2–1 to begin the new season, with its lone loss coming in a narrow 118–117 road loss to the new-look Bucks, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. Embiid and Maxey have been stellar thus far, both averaging north of 30 points per game, with Embiid's current averages at 31.0 points, 10.3 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 3.0 blocks per game.

Maxey has made waves to start the new year, averaging 30.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists while shooting 50% from the field and a scorching 56% from beyond the arc.
