Joe Wicks' age, Loose Women controversy and how he got famous

Fitness fanatic Joe Wicks became a household name as he helped people keep fit when the nation was plunged into lockdown.

Joe Wicks is also known as "The Body Coach". And while the 37-year-old is now a celebrity, this wasn't always the case.

Wicks, who is an MBE, Studied sports science at university before becoming a teaching assistant. After a short while he realised this wasn't the career for him, and decided to become a personal trainer instead.

As Wicks progressed in fitness knowledge and experience, his public profile rose, Surrey Live reports. In 2012, Wicks appeared as a contestant on the Channel 4 gameshow, The Bank Job.

In 2016, he was given his own miniseries on Channel 4, titled Joe Wicks: The Body Coach, which he presented.

Alongside TV appearances, Wicks’ online profile also increased, as in 2014, he began promoting fitness and nutrition on Instagram which caught traction. Fast forward to 2023, and he now has some 4.6m followers.

Wicks also now has his own kitchenware, which he launched in 2018, books, and has also completed a 24-hour workout challenge which raised over £2 million for Children in Need. Of course, his workouts on TV helped raise his profile even more so during the pandemic.

In February of last year, an edited Loose Women clip sparked rumours that Carol McGiffin didn't like Wicks. The dubbed footage showed the regular panelist appear to slam Wicks ahead of his appearance on the show.

As the credits rolled, host Ruth Langsford revealed that he would be joining them on the show the following day as the camera switched up to a wide angle to show all the four Loose Women sat at their seats, the Mirror reports.

Speaking to the camera, Ruth said: "Tomorrow, we've got the nation's PE teacher Joe Wicks, who is going to be warming us up by coming by for a natter. Have a lovely afternoon," as the credits begin to roll. In the funny clip, Carol can then be heard saying: "I really don't like him. I don't like him. Don't like him."

And while it later turned out to just be dubbed by a fan of the show, many people fell for the joke.

Making light of the situation at the time, Wicks posted the edited video on his Instagram story and shared two selfies alongside it which showed him grimacing in response.
