Joe Root vows belligerent England won't be slowing down amid stunning Test revival

Joe Root has vowed that England "won't be slowing down anytime soon" after a stunning summer of Test cricket under the new captain and coach combination of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

The pair inherited a side that had won just one of their last 17 Test matches and inspired them to six wins in seven this summer for the first time since 2004, with England now playing an aggressive and positive brand of cricket.

And with England's next challenge a three Test series against Pakistan in December, Root has insisted they will keep playing in the same manner. "It has been incredible," Root told Sky Sports.

"It has been great fun to be a part of and great to play the style of cricket that we have. Obviously to get back to winning ways as well and be part of some brilliant Test match wins has been really fun.

"It is nice to see the side flourish and take some big steps forward and hopefully we can take that into the winter and beyond now.

"I think it has been good for the game and has been good for Test cricket. It has certainly been fun to be a part of and the response from people watching who have clearly enjoyed it too.

"One thing for sure is we won't be slowing down anytime soon. We will keep going and trying to keep playing in the manner that we have done and better the way we do it as well."

Root also paid tribute to Stokes' leadership, adding: "I think he's been awesome. He's galvanised the team really well, he's very clear with his messaging and he leads by example on the field.

"He doesn't just put in performances with skill and fitness, it takes something more than that to be able to do 10 over spells when the team really needs it to break games open as well as scoring big hundreds."
