Joe Root 'didn't try enough' as concerned Michael Vaughan questions captaincy future

Former captain Michael Vaughan has questioned Joe Root 's future as England skipper, suggesting he may not have the energy to continue following their tour of the West Indies.

Root has been in charge for over five years, leading England in 64 Test matches. That is more Tests than any other England captain and only Greaeme Smith, Allan Border, Stephen Fleming, Ricky Ponting, Clive Lloyd and Virat Kohli have led their respective side's more often than Root.

And Vaughan has questioned whether the time is right for Root to surrender the captaincy, suggesting Root showed "a lack of imagination" in the field on day three of the final Test. "Joe Root will look at this series if it goes wrong and start to think if he is the man to take England forward as captain," he told BT Sport.

"Root might even wake up in a month's time and think to himself: 'I don't want to be captain any more.' I'm sure people will be throwing things at the TV - there was a lack of imagination.

"Joe Root concerned me - I don't think he tried enough this morning, whether it was bringing him or Dan Lawrence on. You have to be energised as a captain - I didn't see enough of that.

"The biggest meeting for the director of cricket and new head coach will be with Joe Root. They'll have to ask 'do you have the energy?' because you can still be going out there but you've lost the energy to do it.

"If he's lost even an ounce of love for doing it, he has got to stop. It's not his problem that there might nor be anyone waiting in the wings." Speaking ahead of this Test, Root outlined his ambitions to continue as skipper but did admit the game could be his last in the role

"I think I'm the right man to take the team forward," he said. "But if the head coach comes in and thinks differently, that's fine, that's their decision.

"I'm a massive England fan. I just want to see us do well. So I'll keep doing everything I can to make us as good as we can be and if that means in time I'm no longer in this position, I'll still do everything I can to help this team and to try to take us to be the best team in the world. That will never change."
