'Say it to the boys!' Joe Marler dragged Wales fan on to the England team bus in Cardiff

Imagine the scene. You are a Wales fan and all of a sudden you find yourself dragged on to the England team bus by Joe Marler.

That was the fate which befell one startled supporter following a meeting between the two old rivals at the Principality Stadium.

Former England scrum-half Danny Care revealed the story when he appeared on the Jonathan Davies show on S4C.

“I remember after one game, there was one guy giving us a load of stick,” said the 84-cap Harlequins veteran.

“We were stuck, because a load of fans had stopped the bus and giving us a load of grief.

“And I remember Joe Marler opened the door, dragged this kid on, shut the door, and then in front of the whole bus, he said ‘Go on then, say your bit to the boys’, and I’ve never seen a guy panic so much in my life!

“Big Joe Marler stole his glasses and was like, ‘We’ll be having them for your troubles’ and kicked him back off the bus in Cardiff somewhere. The Welsh fans, I love them!”

Care continued: “Some of my best memories of playing for England, win or lose, was playing at the Principality in that stadium.

“For me, it’s the greatest stadium I’ve ever played in. I really believe that, with the atmosphere you get.

“I always remember the drive through Cardiff, as an away team, especially if you’ve got an England shirt on, you’re not particularly liked there, which I love.

“I’ll always remember seeing an old, old lady – she must have been around 85 or 90 - giving us the fingers as we walked in!

“I love the passion, and that it takes over everyone, and I love that rugby is everything for everyone there, and I love every moment of playing against Wales at the Principality.”

Care was asked by Jonathan Davies which Welsh players he didn’t like playing against.

“I always found Mike Phillips hard to play against,” he replied.

“I mean, it’s not fair that he used to play scrum-half, because he should have played in the second row, he was that tall.

“And I think he loved the fact that he was bigger than the likes of me, so he would come and stand next to me at a scrum and almost laugh at me. It was so condescending!

“As a little lad, I always tried to fight above my weight, but with someone like Mike Phillips, he would try and physically dominate you and to be fair, he did mostly.”
