Joe Marchant has not given up hope of playing for England in their Six Nations opener against Scotland despite testing positive for Covid-19.
Harlequins centre Marchant tested positive for the virus on Friday, but could be back in training towards the end of this week.
England boss Eddie Jones will hope the 25-year-old is available to play as he is already without fellow centres Manu Tuilagi and Owen Farrell for Saturday’s trip to Murrayfield.
Marchant is an ideal solution to England’s midfield selection issues, given he plays at Harlequins with fly-half Marcus Smith.
England are dealing with other fitness problems ahead of the Six Nations as prop Joe Marler is also in isolation after testing positive for Covid last week.
Courtney Lawes, who would most likely captain England in Farrell’s absence, is still going through head injury return to play protocols and lock Jonny Hill is also struggling with a foot injury.
