Joe Lycett trolled Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak live to their faces and people are loving it

Joe Lycett's appearance on new BBC Sunday morning show, Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, has been heralded as "one of the finest TV moments" by some viewers on social media. The comedian, 34, was among the first guests to feature on the show and while being interviewed he took the time to do some "Grade A trolling", according to one viewer. Joe previously aimed a dig at the UK Government at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. You can read more about that here.

Asked by host Laura about the strength of Liz Truss’ position at the moment, Joe reflected: "I think the haters will say that we’ve had 12 years of the Tories and that we’re sort of at the dregs of what they’ve got available and that Liz Truss is the backwash of the available MPs. I wouldn’t say that because I’m incredibly right wing, but some people might say that."

The Birmingham-born star, who was clearly being sarcastic, then discussed 'predicting the future' of politics. He said: "As Liz said there, it would be wrong to predict the future – even though loads of people have predicted that we’re going to have real issues with paying our energy bills. But I think she’s right to say, 'Let’s not predict and see what happens next week.' I think she did the right thing there!"

Laura, who was clearly aware of Joe's humorous responses, replied: "There’s a serious point, Joe". She suggested there’s a big package of help coming this week to help people pay their bills. Joe responded: "She was very clear what she said!" and then added: "I think we know exactly what’s going to happen. You’re reassured, I’m reassured, are you reassured?!"

During his appearance on the show, Joe also took aim at other PM hopeful Rishi Sunak and commented how "he’s not going to be Prime Minister, so you may as well have interviewed Peter Andre".

The interview provoked a huge reaction on social media. One person even went to the extent of saying: "One of the finest TV moments I have ever seen. He completely trounced @bbclaurak humourless Tory client journalism. I would urge everybody to watch it. Ignore Truss’ bit. Just fast forward to @joelycett."

Another agreed: "Wasn’t a @joelycett fan when he originally appeared as a comedian but that lad has grown hugely, now having my utmost respect for the causes he supports and the work he has undertaken in speaking truth to power!"

A third commented: "Satire is essential. Style, time and place, all pitch-perfect in the instance of Joe Lycett's recent appearance. There's nothing serious about a format that is in itself ridiculous and farcical."

Those who didn't watch live, quickly headed to BBC iPlayer to catch up: "I have had to go on IPlayer just to watch Joe Lycett, absolutely brilliant. Annoyed w my daughters who got tickets to go and see him in London and didn’t invite me too."

Perhaps summing up Joe's appearance on the show, someone wrote: "Grade A trolling from @joelycett this morning. Sensational scenes."

Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg continues next Sunday on BBC One at 9am. You can read more politics stories here.
