Joe Lacob reveals how Warriors ‘Warmed’ to Chris Paul idea

The Golden State Warriors decision to acquire Chris Paul earlier this summer has split the fanbase. There’s no denying that the veteran guard will improve the Warriors’ guard rotation or that his presence could aid the development of younger talents such as Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski.

Yet, the questionable fit, checkered history, and Paul being at such a late stage in his career have all been causes for concern. During a recent appearance on ‘The TK Show,’ Golden State’s Joe Lacob revealed how the Warriors ‘warmed’ to the idea of adding Paul to their rotation, noting how he initially believed adding the veteran star was ‘highly unlikely.’

“Chris Paul, when I first heard that and thought about it, it was, like, really? Seems highly unlikely we would do that,” Lacob told The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami. “But the more we thought about it, the more we considered our options, the more we realized he’s a great player, always has made other people better. He hasn’t won a championship, maybe he can do that with our group… We kind of warmed to that idea and the more we processed it the more we thought it really made sense — at least for the short-to-intermediate term.”

If Paul is willing to accept a bench role in the coming season, Golden State will have arguably the deepest guard rotation in the NBA. Paul’s ability to break down a defense, create high-quality opportunities for others, and pick his spots on offense will provide Golden State with the second-unit floor general they’ve been craving for multiple years.

Of course, if all goes to plan, and Paul makes the impact Lacob and Warriors fans are hoping for, the future Hall of Famer could finally win his first championship ring.
