Joe Jacobson sends Sunderland warning ahead of play-off final

Joe Jacobson has warned Sunderland that Wycombe Wanderers are capable of changing the way they play quite easily ahead of the League One play-off showdown. The Chairboys have the reputation of being a direct, but effective team and the Black Cats are expecting a physical encounter.

However, the Chairboys captain claims his side have shown their adaptability throughout the years and will be able to adapt to different scenarios throughout the final. He told Bucks Free Press : “We can change up the way that we play quite easily. We have got players that can run the games on their own, and we’ve got a group of players that can all run with each other, as well as trackback and do other work as well.

“The MK Dons game wasn’t just a defensive performance from the defenders, it was by everyone.”

Jacobson was part of the Wycombe side that won promotion to the Championship two seasons ago, but he believes promotion back to the second tier would benefit the fans more than the players. The Chairboys won promotion in front of an empty Wembley Stadium after the Covid-19 pandemic put a halt to proceedings.

Wycombe defeated Oxford United in the final after a four month wait for play to resume, with Jacobson scoring the all important goal to win promotion. He said: “Wycombe have had one year of Championship football and no fans, apart from the two were we had supporters, were allowed to go.

“The fans are desperate to come and see us in the Championship. The final is obviously great, but they want to see us in the Championship against one of the biggest clubs in English football. As much as the boys want to do it for themselves and for their families, we want to do it for the club and the fans.”
