Joe Gelhardt prediction made as Leeds United loanee makes Sunderland impression

Joe Gelhardt has only played one match in Sunderland colours, but his new teammates are already tipping him to be a difference maker for the Black Cats. The Leeds United loanee linked up with Tony Mowbray’s side in the closing days of the January transfer window and his start to life in the North East has been a little stop-start.

The striker was cup-tied for the FA Cup fourth round clash with Fulham and the replay that followed, but his debut came in south London last weekend against Millwall. He drew a blank in front of goal at The Den, but he showed some promising glimpses and gave the Lions’ back line plenty to think about as he strived to impress before being replaced by Abdoullah Ba in the closing minutes of the contest.

The 20-year-old is expected to make a home bow this weekend when Sunderland welcome Reading to the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon and he’ll be keen to shine as the club push for a play-off spot. Ahead of that contest, Black Cats defender Danny Batth has been speaking about the impression Gelhardt has made on him over the last couple of weeks and he’s predicting big things.

"He's sharp, he can pose a threat in behind," said Batth, as per Chronicle Live. “He's different to what we've had in Ross but good players don't take too long to get used to playing with each other.

“I've got no doubt that all those boys up front can start sliding balls in for him. He can be a pest in the box and get across a defender.

“He can hold the ball up, he's strong, so I hope we see the best of him. I think everyone will get behind him and he'll do well for us."

Gelhardt made the move to Sunderland after struggling for Premier League minutes under Jesse Marsch at Elland Road. However, following the American’s dismissal earlier this week, Leeds are on the lookout for a new head coach and Gelhardt will be determined to impress with Sunderland over the second half of the season and catch his eye before returning to Thorp Arch.
