Joe Cole makes Timo Werner claim after Chelsea forward's impressive display vs Crystal Palace

Joe Cole believes that Timo Werner has proved he may have a future at Chelsea after a string of encouraging performances. The German forward has struggled to settle at the club since joining from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2020, but is finally starting to deliver for the Blues.

Werner impressed during Chelsea’s FA Cup semi- final victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday, providing an assist for Mason Mount’s goal. He also netted in the midweek aggregate defeat to Real Madrid, and notched a brace during last weekend’s 6-0 win over Southampton.

His two strikes against the Saints took his tally of league goals up to three, which show how much he has struggled this term. However, the 26-year-old is thriving playing alongside Kai Havertz and Mount in the Blues’ attack, and Cole is confident that now Werner is providing an end product he may have earned himself another chance at Chelsea after it seemed he was destined for a summer exit.

"It was a lovely assist for Mason," Cole said on ITV. "He’s (Werner) always a bright spark, he always brings something to the party.

"Even when he’s not at his very very best. I think after the last three or four weeks there may be a future for him at Chelsea. On that role high up on the left, he threatens, he gets behind. He can be very pleased with his day’s work. That’s for sure.

"Timo Werner doesn’t give up. When he doesn’t score a goal he’s offering something else."

Mount also hailed Werner’s recent renaissance, highlighting his work rate as one of his best attributes.

"He’s brilliant," Mount said after the game. "Done so well the last couple of games. In the second half he had a chance and missed, ran all the way back to the half-way line to win the ball. That shows the sort of player he is."
