Joe Canning critical of Henry Shefflin decision despite Galway's win over Cork

Joe Canning believes Henry Shefflin was wrong to move Conor Whelan back down the pitch in Galway's All-Ireland quarter-final win over Cork.

Whelan scored 1-02 as the Tribesmen defeated the Rebels by a single point at Semple Stadium, but Galway legend Canning believes it was the wrong decision to switch his former teammate's position.

Canning was working as a pundit on RTE Two for the clash and was joined in the studio by Davy Fitzgerald and Anna Geary.

Speaking on Galway after the game, Fitzgerald said: "I still think Galway have more to do. I still think they can't be happy with that. There is things that they have to execute a lot better.

"But they're in the All-Ireland semi-final. Happy out.

When asked if he thinks Galway have "more in them", Canning replied: "I think they do. In the second half bringing out Conor Whelan... close to goal is his place and if you leave him with enough ball inside he'll do damage but they brought him out around the 45 and he didn't really [have an impact from that position].

Canning insisted that his former teammate has to be patient when playing in front of goal.

He explained: "He just has to be patient. It's just all about patience at this level. You might only get five balls in the match and it's one.

"He got a goal at the start. One ball in. That's it."

Fitzgerald said he couldn't understand the decision to bring Whelan out.

He added: "The last 15-20 minutes he was out of the game completely."
