Joe Canning 'absolutely sick' after Galway's Leinster final loss to Kilkenny

Joe Canning has described Galway's last-gasp Leinster final defeat as 'sickening' as The Tribesmen were beaten by Kilkenny at the death.

Cillian Buckley popped up in the dying seconds of injury time to pounce on a poor clearance, dance past a couple of defenders and fire the sliotar into the bottom right hand corner.

That goal was enough to secure a 75th Leinster title and sent Kilkenny players and supporters into raptures as they celebrated the win.

The manner of the goal and the defeat however frustrated Galway legend Joe Canning, who couldn't fathom how Galway went from having possession near the sideline to conceding a goal in the space of seconds.

When it was mentioned by host Joanne Cantwell that Canning was questioning how the ball even ended up in Buckley's hands Canning replied "Yeah, absolutely sick to be straight up about it.

"It was in the corner, they could have cleared it two or three times. It's just a sickening way to lose it because they did so well to come back and I think they were 7 or 8 points down at one stage.

"I thought the (Galway) lads were going to fall over at one stage... Even a line ball..."

After a scramble in the corner that saw TJ Reid stripped of possession, the sliotar fell to the feet of Padraic Mannion, whose booted clearance could only find the matchwinner Buckley.

Analysing this part of the goal, Canning's frustration was clear as day.

"Even just here... Padraic just kicked at it... I'm just sick the way it's gone in to be straight up about it."

In fairness to Canning, he didn't join the growing online brigade who felt Buckley may have taken too many steps in the lead up to the goal, with the Galway legend deeming the goal "legitimate."
