Joe Burrow says the Cincinnati Bengals offense is going to have some new looks in 2022.
Part of that pursuit of throwing more new looks out there and being even more aggressive earlier in the season is made possible by the revamped offensive line.
Burrow says training camp is where some of those new looks will start working their way into the offense.
“I’m going into (training camp) expecting that we can kind of open it up a little bit and maybe throw some things in there we weren’t able to do last year and the year before,” Burrow said., according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “We have a really good core group of plays that we know really well and we’re good at so we’re not going to abandon that.”
Based on Burrow’s comments, it sounds like the team believes it left some wins on the table early last season against beatable opponents, at least in part, because the playbook wasn’t nearly as expanded as it was by the end of the year.
A lot of things, including Burrow coming back from an injury, contributed to that, of course. But that’s the benefit of everyone being healthy and the continuity of the offense from last season — the offense can build upon that end-of-season base.
The Bengals spent big in free agency while upgrading three offensive line spots, adding Ted Karras and Alex Cappa to the interior and La’el Collins at offensive tackle. Jackson Carman will compete with others at the left guard spot.
The line upgrades, based on grades compared to last year’s starters, are very, very significant.
